It's looking like the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2004 will certainly be worth having --- look at these latest numbers on Bush and his administration. Meltdown?

Including results from the latest poll, we see the following declines in popularity since soon after September 11, 2001:

* President Bush down from 88% to 52%, a decline of 36 points.

* Secretary of State Colin Powell down from 88% to 76%, a decline of 12 points.

* Vice President Dick Cheney down from 69% to 45%, a decline of 24 points.

* Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld down from 78% to 56%, a decline of 22 points.

* Attorney General John Ashcroft down from 65% to 51%, a decline of 14 points.

* House Speaker Dennis Hastert down from 52% to 33%, a decline of 19 points.

In the web tradition of bloggers promoting other bloggers, a comment by the editor of WaxWorks has been posted on Howard Bashman's How Appealing website -

See if you can guess which of these e-mails was mine. It's a commentary on the Estrada nomination and on a recent back and forth between Senators Leahy and Hatch. Just so you understand the context: Leahy made a statement in 1998 that he was opposed to the anonymous holds that Republican Senators were putting on Clinton's nominees and, in the course, stated that he was opposed to filibusters. Republicans, including Senator Hatch are now charging Leahy with hypocrisy.

Leahy supporters have pointed to a speech that Hatch gave to the Federalist Society in 1997 where Hatch said that nominees who did not have a paper trail as a prior judge deserved closer questioning on their views (which is what Democrats have tried to do with Estrada). My e-mail is in response to Howard Bashman, who runs How Appealing, trying to defend Hatch and lambaste Leahy.
