I'm reading the Supreme Court's decision today in Lawrence v. Kansas, concerning the Texas sodomy law, and I'm amazed by the broad nature of the ruling and the language used by Justice Kennedy. This opinion could have been written by Justice Brennan or Justice Blackmun (in fact, the opinion's logic borrows from Blackmun's dissent in Bowers v. Hardwick, back in 1986, which Lawrence overruled today). This is the biggest step forward for the gay rights movement in history, and Justice Kennedy, having written two extremely pro-gay rights decisions (the other being Romer v. Evans in 1996, striking down a Colorado anti-gay ordinance), has to be one of the historical heroes for gay men and women everywhere.
