During this whole Lott escapade, some conservatives I know have been trying to excuse Lott's behavior by revisiting Al Gore, Sr.'s opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. I've responded by showing them evidence that Al Sr. regretted this for the rest of his life and that Gore, Jr. had fights with his dad over this vote, and also Al Sr. adamantly refused to sign on to Strom's Southern Manifesto.

Now, apparently, if we're going to go back into people's ancestry, Michael Kinsley's new column mentions something I never knew before: that George Bush Sr. (good ol' 41) stressed his opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act during an unsuccessful run for the Senate in Texas in 1964.
